Residence Halls

Maintenance or Room-Related Issues

If you have a concern with your room, please contact the Switchboard at (507) 452-4430 or dial “0” from a campus phone. Please report any maintenance issues as soon as they are discovered.

Professional Residential Staff

We have both professional staff and student staff living within the residence halls. The contact information for staff is posted in every building for your assistance.

Refrigerators

Each residential hall has a refrigerator in a common space kitchen.

Lost and Found Items

Items found in the rooms are kept for 30 days. If you or someone in your group has left an item behind, please contact Campus Safety at (507) 457-1703 or dial “0” from a campus phone. Any items unclaimed after 30 days will be donated.

Fire Safety

As a responsible guest staying in one of our residence halls, candles (lit or unlit) are not allowed. Do not hang items (blankets, posters, flags, material, strings of lights, etc.) from the ceilings or cover ceiling lights with flammable materials. Heat-producing appliances must not be left unattended. Unplug them when not in use and allow appliance to cool before storing.

At any time a fire alarm is sounded, all persons must immediately evacuate the building. No one is to assume an alarm is a false alarm. After moving out of the building, entry is not possible without clearance from a member of the university professional staff. Respect for fire alarms is a paramount safety concern.

WHEN ALARM SOUNDS, EVACUATE THE BUILDING AND GATHER IN THESE AREAS

Severe Weather Safety

The tornado season in Minnesota is usually from April to October. The majority of the tornados occur in the early summer months. However, the most severe tornados occur in April and Mary. The peak time of day for tornados to occur is between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

TORNADO WATCH VS. TORNADO WARNING

WATCH: A tornado watch means weather conditions are favorable for the development of tornados in the area. Information on a watch is given over radio and television from the Weather Bureau or by emergency governmental agencies of the city and county.

WARNING: A tornado warning means a tornado has actually been sighted in the area. The emergency sirens will sound a steady tone for three minutes or longer if there is danger in the immediate area. The offices of Residence Life and Campus Safety will notify guests of a tornado warning.

IN CASE OF TORNADO WARNING: When warning sirens sound, seek inside shelter, preferably in a basement or below-ground evacuation location. A steel-framed or reinforced concrete building provides some shelter protection.

In a multi-story building, seek shelter in an interior hallway on a lower floor. STAY AWAY FROM OUTSIDE WALLS AND GLASS WINDOWS OR PARTITIONS.

While in the shelter, keep listening to your radio for the latest tornado advisory information and remain there until the “ALL CLEAR” signal has been given from Residence Life or Campus Safety.
